Dune area Oranjezon
The Oranjezon area, eminently suitable for hikes and rambles, is situated on the north-western coast of Walcheren, just outside Vrouwenpolder. It measures approximately 400 hectares and is managed by foundation Het Zeeuwse Landschap. Oranjezon is part of the Walcheren Manteling. The area was designated a nature reserve in 1988.

History
The Oranjezon dune area is part of the younger dunes which came into being between the 13th and 18th century. It is an treasured nature reserve. The following transitions in vegetation can be seen from the beach towards the polders situated behind the dunes. From the coastal strip of dunes with its specific marram grass cover, the vegetation gradually changes to sea buckthorn scrub. Species such as hawthorn, dog rose and brambles established themselves further inland..

The vegetation then changes via dune grasslands, scrub and stands of wood into a natural deciduous wood in the inner dune zone. A coniferous wood is situated in the centre of the area. Man is responsible for the dune area as it appears today, due to anchoring of the original drifting dunes and the discovery of drinking water. Before humans interfered with the dunes, Oranjezon must have been a glorious dune area with dune pools, brooks and a large drifting sand area.
